Even as traditional plans and other retirement entitlements begin disappearing, 48% of all non-retired adult Americans continue to look forward to retiring with a pension according to a recent American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) survey. Meanwhile, the 2007 Annual Retirement Confidence Survey (RCS) revealed that while only 41% of workers or their spouses have employer-provided retirement benefits, 62% say they expect to receive income from such a retirement plan. According to another survey, the 2007 American Retirement Study, 42% of baby boomers (between 45 and 64) will not have the financial resources to maintain the lifestyle they want in retirement. Almost 31% of them say they will have to cut back on their lifestyle spending when they retire. The survey implies American workers realize the retirement system is undergoing a major transformation.

Tax on Big Oil fuels problems on many levels

After all, barrels of cash seemingly flow from the wallets of motorists into the pockets of the five major petroleum refiners-ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, ConocoPhillips and Chevron. Last year, ExxonMobil reported $40 billion in profit-the most ever by a company in any year. Prices at gas pumps seemingly go up and down arbitrarily, regardless of oil prices. So it seems fair to tap into that cash to prop up our state's transportation fund.

However, such sentiment is wrong. Doyle's tax would have many unintended consequences.

Dan Gunderson, a lobbyist for the big petroleum companies, met Tuesday with the Gazette Editorial Board and confirmed many of our suspicions and concerns.

Wisconsin would be the first state to make it illegal for oil companies to pass on to consumers this tax on gross receipts.

Newmont backs watchdog move

In what is believed to be a first for a U.S. mining company, Denver-based Newmont Mining is supporting a shareholder proposal asking the firm to report on its social and environmental issues.

The resolution, brought by 11 institutional shareholders, will be voted on at Newmont's annual meeting Tuesday in Wilmington, Del.

"This is a bold step by Newmont," said Julie Tanner, a spokeswoman for New York- based Christian Bros. Investment Services Inc., one of the Newmont shareholders.

"This is a real breakthrough in that this is the first time that a mining company has agreed to urge shareholders to support a social resolution," Tanner said. "With the release of a substantive and thorough report, it will indicate that the company takes the issue seriously."

Newmont, the world's second-largest gold miner, has faced community opposition at several of its mining sites in the U.S., Peru, Indonesia and Ghana.
