| Police warn of jury scam
Salina Police are warning people to be wary of a scam going on in other states in which people are called and told they're in trouble for failing to report for jury duty as a premise for gaining personal information. There have been no reports in Kansas, said Mike Marshall, deputy chief of the Salina police department, but there have been incidents in 11 states, including Oklahoma and Colorado. A press release Marshall issued indicated that as part of the scam, people are called and told a warrant is out for their arrest because they failed to report for jury duty. When the person responds that they never received a notice, the caller says the matter can be cleared up if the person will provide information such as date of birth and Social Security number for "verification purposes." Anyone who receives such a call should hang up, according to information provided in the press release, which also advises people never to give out personal information when they receive an unsolicited phone call.
Aguirre's pension arguments debated
Lawyers doing battle over San Diego's pension benefits argued yesterday over City Attorney Michael Aguirre's desire to target nearly 20,000 current and former city employees in an attempt to reduce the city's retirement debt. The parties returned to court after a three-month break, in which the future of the case was supposed to take shape, following Aguirre's loss in its early stage last year. That decision left most of the benefits immune from challenge, but attorneys for four employee groups accused Aguirre of ignoring the ruling in his first crack at crafting an amended suit to focus on individuals whose pensions still could be reduced. Aguirre acknowledged that he expects the field to be trimmed, but he asked the court to allow him to proceed without serving anyone.
Disaster Meeting
Today Senator Kent Conrad is meeting with farmers and ranchers from the area to discuss his disaster aid bill that passed the house and senate. The details of the bill call for about four-point-two billion dollars in disaster relief. About two hundred million dollars of this will be coming to North Dakota. Senator Conrad says one compromise made in the bill is that farmers and ranchers will have to choose to take relief for either 2005 or 2006.(Sen. Kent Conrad/ D-ND)"It's gonna make a big difference. This is not a Cadillac plan it's more of a chevrolet plan but it's going to make a meaningful difference to an awful lot of people in North Dakota." This news comes at the right time for many of these farmers and ranchers. This is when they are beginning to prepare for the upcoming growing season.
Freeze on pension opts
Argentines will not be able to change their private pension fund providers until next year as part of a wider reform of the US$30 billion system, according to a government decree to be published today. The ban on switching funds aims to avoid cut-throat competition between funds during the pensions shake-up, which also lets people move back into a state pension system, said a source at the regulatory agency that oversees pension funds. It was decided in order to organize the process of affiliates changing funds... that any switch people ask for will not go into effect until next year," said the source, who asked not to be named. Under current rules, private pension-fund holders can change to another private fund twice a year if they want to. .
Cowen publishes the Markets in Financial Instruments and ...
The Minister for Finance, Mr Brian Cowen TD, today announced that the Government had approved the publication of the Markets in Financial Instruments and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2007. The EU Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) was recently transposed into Irish law. The MiFID harmonises and modernises the EU-wide legislative framework for investment firms, promoting greater cross-border competition and the competitiveness of the EU financial sector overall. The Bill being published today provides for some complementary measures to specify significant penalties following conviction on indictment for breaches of regulatory requirements under MiFID. The Bill is also being availed of to make a range of largely technical amendments to various Acts including those concerning the National Treasury Management Agency, the Financial Regulator, the Financial Services Ombudsman, Ministerial pensions and credit unions.
