Life gets better
The long-term insurance industry sees some tough times, but could new stats showing inflows up 14% over 2006 totaling R50.2billion in new individual life business mean the worst is over? Gerhard Joubert is on the line from the Life Offices Association (LOA) LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Gerhard, the industry has had a bit of a tough time, but I was quite startled by these impressive numbers GERHARD JOUBERT: It is. If you look at the recurring premium numbers, which is an important indicator of the health of our industry, that went up to R9.5billion last year which was up 12.5% over 2005. So that number has steadily been increasing over the last few years - and its actually up 28% half-year on half-year last year as well. LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Why is that such an important indicator? GERHARD JOUBERT: Thats the core of our business.

School caretaker says hello to retirement.
He took the word "custodian" to heart, considering himself to have custody of something that needed careful looking after. But for Giles, who retired this month at 65, the job was never just about a building. "It's really for the teachers and the kids," he said. A sparkling space, Giles said, sets the tone for learning, and for "a brighter outlook on life." That belief seems to reflect his own bright outlook. Giles, his wife, Judy, and sons Scott and Timothy moved to this area from Maryland 30 years ago because they preferred its slower pace and sense of community. He came to the school after working for years in the millwork industry. Before that, he was a calculator repairman back when calculators were creations of springs and ratchets that went "chunkachunkachunka," Giles recalled.
