Keeping Your Identity Safe Online

We live in a time when using computers for purchases, bill paying, and banking are becoming more and more the norm. Broadband and constant, fast connectivity are the accepted standards. Given just how much computers are a part of our daily lives, you should find a couple of recent pieces of news very disturbing.

A government survey in the U.K. found that 12% of respondents had suffered from online fraud in 2006, yet fewer than half of the respondents believed they should be responsible for protecting their personal information online.

The other item was a story in the New York Times that stated thousands of Social Security numbers are posted online by states and counties. Of course, along with them you often find addresses, dates of birth, and maiden names. It's like offering someone's identity on a platter to thieves.

SPRINGFIELD -- MassMutual Financial Group announced today the creation of a new group - MassMutual Retirement Income (MMRI) - to enhance its ongoing efforts in serving the retail retirement- accumulation and retirement-income market. MMRI will deliver advisor-focused solutions for customers' accumulation and guaranteed lifetime income needs.

Drew Dickey, Senior Vice President for Retirement Income, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), has been appointed to lead the new MMRI group, which integrates MassMutual's Annuity and Income Management Group business units. Dickey, 50, has been with MassMutual since 1991 and was most recently President of MassMutual's Financial Products Division.

Professor Gets Early Retirement After Planting Illegal Palm Trees

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- MiraCosta College trustees have approved an early retirement for a horticulture professor who was allegedly responsible for an illegal palm tree growing operation at the school, it was reported Friday.

The unanimous decision to approve the retirement for Alleen Texeira was made Thursday, a day after the college released a 200-page summary of a 17-month investigation into the tree-growing operation, the North County Times reported. .

Corona-Norco's new superintendent hired

The Corona-Norco school board approved a contract Thursday morning with its new superintendent Kent Bechler, agreeing to an annual salary of $250,000.

The contract could make Bechler the highest-paid superintendent in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and one of the highest paid in the state. Superintendent salaries in many districts have escalated in recent years, as the pool of available candidates has shrunk.

District officials did not make the full contract available Thursday, but board President Maggie Little said it also includes a $25,000 annuity and a $900 monthly car allowance.
