Home loans to endure until death us do part

THE medieval meaning of the word mortgage has taken on fresh significance now that the home loan has become a cradle-to-grave proposition.

The term comes from an Old French word that combines mort, or death, and gage, to pledge. This literal meaning of mortgage - death pledge - has not scared off Australian borrowers, who have been on a decade-long debt splurge.

However, a sharp rise in the proportion of older home-loan-borrowers suggests mortgages will be a pledge until death for many more people than in the past.

One in every four households in the 55-to-64-year-old age bracket has a mortgage on the house they live in, up from one in 10 a decade ago.

And the rate of increase is gathering pace - the proportion of 55-to-64-year-olds with a mortgage jumped by 7 percentage points between 2002 and 2005 to 27 per cent, the fastest increase in any age bracket.

Pharmacist looks to enjoy his retirement

Jim Ostle's close-knit family kept him in the family pharmacy for almost 55 years, but because the business climate for independent pharmacists has changed for the worse, Ostle has found it difficult to keep up. So he has sold his business to his competitor, and neighbor, Todd Evers, who operates a pharmacy just down the street. Ostle is retiring after business today and will leave a building that has housed only his and other drug stores in downtown Collinsville since it opened in 1880. He talked to reporter Will Buss about his career:

Q: What will you do with your new-found free time?

A: "I'm a librarian at the church library, and I also have my (model) trains."

Q: Did you always plan to go into the family business?

A: "My father was a pharmacist, and I was all signed up to go to the St.
